God Gives What is Good {No Matter What Monday}

February 17, 2020 by Marissa Leave a Comment

One day when my son was little, I asked him what he wanted for lunch. “Chips,” he replied quickly and confidently. I asked what he wanted with his chips, and he answered, “Dip.” Unfortunately for him, I didn’t think chips and dip were good choices for lunch, and I didn’t give him what he asked for.

I think of that day when I feel like God is answering my prayers. Just as my son asked for what he thought would make a good lunch, I ask God for what seems good to me. I’m expecting God to get on board with my fantastic plans. But it doesn’t always turn out that way. Did He not hear my prayer? Was He unable to provide? Or did He just not want to?

Psalm 66:19 tells us that God listens to our prayers. Psalm 135:6 teaches that God does everything that He pleases. And Matthew 7:11 shows God’s desire to give good gifts to His children:

“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11)

If God hears our prayers, if God is able to give us everything He chooses, and if God delights in giving good gifts to His children, why doesn’t He always say yes to our requests?

When God withholds that which we think is good, we need to trust that we actually asked for chips and dip. God knows what is truly for our good. He gives good gifts and withholds what isn’t for our good. Sometimes this doesn’t make any sense at all from our limited, earthly perspective. But we can trust Him to always give us what’s for our best.

No matter what you face this week, God will give you what is good.

God Can Be Trusted {No Matter What Monday}

February 10, 2020 by Marissa Leave a Comment

Four years ago, I started a weekly series on my blog called “No Matter What Monday.” I looked ahead at my week and saw challenges. I wondered about struggles that could pop up unexpectedly. And I knew I needed to be clinging to the one constant in life: the truth of God’s character.

Maybe you think I’ve been writing these devotionals for you for the past 4 years. I have been writing them for you, but I’ve also been writing them for me. I get so distracted by daily life, and I need constant reminders of God’s promises.

Here’s a throw back to the first No Matter What Monday from 2016:

Os Guiness writes, “Christians do not say, ‘I do not understand you at all, but I trust you anyway.’ Rather we say, ‘I do not understand you in this situation, but I understand why I trust you anyway.’”

Can you say that? Do you understand why you trust God even when you don’t understand what He’s doing?

God has proved His trustworthiness in many ways—in our lives, in His Word, and in history. The ultimate demonstration of His trustworthiness was the cross of Jesus Christ.

“He who did not spare his own son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? “ (Romans 8:32)

God made the greatest sacrifice to meet our greatest need when He gave His Son for the salvation of sinners. He proved that He will go to any lengths necessary to meet the needs of His beloved children. Therefore, we can trust Him.

Our trust wanes and falters at times, doesn’t it? I know mine does! I’m thankful that my hope is in God’s unchangeable character, not my own fickle faith.

We may not trust perfectly, and some days we may not even feel like trusting at all. But God’s grace, we can cling to our understanding of God’s character, even when we don’t understand our circumstances.

No matter what we face this week, God can be trusted.

God Has Not Forgotten You {No Matter What Monday}

February 3, 2020 by Marissa Leave a Comment

Her dark brown eyes stared up at me from her bed, just above the bright floral comforter pulled up to her chin. She tried to sound casual as she asked her pressing bedtime questions: “Mom, which one of us do you love the most? Do you love Will more than me?”

I tell my daughter I love her and prove it with my actions every day. And yet, when she watched me stop to comfort her hurting brother on my way to tuck her in, my daughter began to doubt my love for her. She questioned a basic truth that has been proven to her every day for her entire life.

Her doubts sound a little too familiar.

My heavenly Father has proven His love for me every day of my life. But when God delays in giving me something I think I need, I start to doubt. I question His timing, His provision, even His goodness. And the undercurrent of these doubts is this: “Does God still love me?”

We might not say it out loud, but as we look at our struggles, we wonder: “Does God still love me?” We cried out to Him for healing, peace, deliverance, or strength, but it feels like He’s stopped in the hallway to care for someone else.

And yet we see in Isaiah that God never forgets His children:

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.” (Isaiah 49:15–16)

God has not forgotten you, His beloved child. He has engraved your name on His hands. Our Savior stretched out those hands on the cross and felt the nails drive through them to demonstrate the extent of His unfailing love for us (Rom. 5:8).

When it seems like God is letting us down—when we don’t understand why He hasn’t swooped in and saved the day—let’s cling to the truth. We can have confidence in His unfailing kindness and love. His love for us is everlasting (Jer. 31:3).

No matter what you face this week, your loving heavenly Father has not forgotten you, and He never will.

The Righteous Son {First 5}

January 31, 2020 by Marissa Leave a Comment

I’m sharing a teaching from Ezekiel 18 today in the First 5 app. Here’s a preview . . .

Ezekiel 18:32 (ESV) “For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live.”

Though I’ve learned most of what I know about the American legal system from watching crime dramas on television, I know this: In our imperfect world, sometimes the innocent are convicted and the guilty go free. It’s not fair. It’s not impartial. It’s not just.

But in God’s courtroom, the right verdict is always given. We learn in Ezekiel 18 that all souls belong to God, and He gives to each person what they deserve. (Ezekiel 18:4) We also see God’s desire to grant mercy to those who repent of their sin. (Ezekiel 18:21)

God’s Just Judgment

In Ezekiel 18, God responds to the Israelites’ complaints during their exile in Babylon. They accuse God of unfairly punishing them for the sin of previous generations, using a popular proverb of the day. (Ezekiel 18:2) Instead of accepting the consequences for their sin, they blame others and cry, “This isn’t fair!”

God lays out a defense of His justice using three examples: a righteous man, (Ezekiel 18:5-9) the righteous man’s wicked son (Ezekiel 18:10-13) and the wicked man’s righteous son. (Ezekiel 18:14-20) Each man receives what his own righteousness or wickedness deserves, regardless of the behavior of his son or his father. (Ezekiel 18:20)

God is a righteous Judge. And in God’s courtroom, Israel stands convicted of injustice and sin. They questioned God’s character, but it is their character that is found lacking. (Ezekiel 18:29-30) Their guilt deserves a death sentence. (Ezekiel 18:4) And yet, God offers them a chance to repent and pass from death to life. (Ezekiel 18:21; John 5:24)
