The Lord is in His Holy Temple {No Matter What Monday}

March 18, 2019 by Marissa 5 Comments

This week we’re continuing in the book of Habakkuk, where we see a conversation between God and a suffering prophet. Habakkuk cried out to the Lord for help, and God told him that He would bring the Chaldeans to oppress the people of Judah. (This was not good news!) As the conversation continues, God tells Habakkuk that He will eventually bring justice and punishment to the wicked Chaldeans. There will be suffering and hardship, but deliverance will come (Habakkuk 2:5-19).

Then God speaks these words of comfort to Habakkuk:

“But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him.” (Habakkuk 2:20)

When I first read these words, they didn’t strike me as greeting card material. I haven’t yet shared this verse in a “thinking of you” card. How can we find comfort in these words?

The Lord’s presence in His holy temple teaches us that He is ruling and reigning over all things. Psalm 11:4 says, “The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD’s throne is in heaven; his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man.” He’s ruling from His throne, and He also sees us. He sees the sin of others that affects us. He sees our hurt. He sees our tears.

And since we live at this point in history, after the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Lord’s presence in His holy temple means even more. God the Son left the throne of heaven to dwell among us. Now His redeemed people have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us – now we are God’s temple. First Corinthians 3:16 says, “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”

God says in Habakkuk 2:20 that He is in His holy temple – and Scripture tells us that we are God’s temple. What does that mean? It means God is with us.

The words of this verse brings comfort to those who are in Christ because we know the Lord reigns from His throne and He resides with us in our suffering.

No matter what you face this week, the Lord is in His holy temple.

Our Light and Salvation {No Matter What Monday}

November 26, 2018 by Marissa Leave a Comment

I’m not a fan of scary movies—in fact, my tolerance for suspense is probably at about the 2nd grade level. At the slightest bit of suspense, my hands fly to my face to cover my eyes, and I make the person next to me to narrate what’s happening. (I don’t want to watch, but I also don’t want to miss anything!) I remember my  friends making fun of me in high school because I got scared watching “Kindergarten Cop.” I don’t remember the movie well, but I’m positive it was more intense than it sounds. 😉

And if I think Kindergarten Cop is scary, the real world is much, much worse. We face days, months, and years filled with uncertainty, suffering, and trouble, and it seems to be getting worse every day.

So how can we possibly follow the Bible’s exhortation to live without fear? Psalm 27:1 offers an answer to that question:

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

The Lord is our light. When all feels dark, His light shines even brighter. Micah 7:8 says, “When I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me.” Isaiah 60:20 refers to the everlasting light of the Lord. Our Heavenly Father promises to always shine His unfailing light into our darkest places.

The Lord is our salvation. Colossians 1:13-14 tells us He’s delivered us from the dominion of darkness, brought us into the kingdom of His Son Jesus Christ, and given us redemption and forgiveness. Our future is secure in Christ, and nothing can snatch us from His hand.

I doubt I will ever completely conquer the temptation to fear in this life—whether watching movies or facing reality. But remembering that the Lord is my light and salvation helps me to face a frightening world with less fear and more confidence in the Lord’s promises.

No matter what you face this week, don’t be afraid—the Lord is your light and salvation.

Your Waiting Will Not Last Forever {No Matter What Monday}

November 19, 2018 by Marissa Leave a Comment

Do you remember what it was like to have out-of-town visitors arriving in the days before cell phones? When I was a kid, I loved the days when our grandparents were coming to town. We knew how far they were driving and could ballpark a estimated arrival time, but we couldn’t be certain. All day we’d watch with eager anticipation for our loved ones, never knowing when the doorbell would end our waiting.

We’ve been talking about waiting for the past couple of weeks. We have courage because it’s the Lord we are waiting for. We remember that God is good to us while we wait. And today let’s find comfort in the promise that our waiting will not last forever. Whether we receive the desires of our hearts here or in heaven, there will be a glorious day when all our waiting will end.

“It will be said on that day, ‘Behold, this is our God; we have waited on him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.’” (Isaiah 25:9)

One day, we will behold our God and realize that all we need is Him. Can you imagine seeing the Lord and wishing you’d gotten that new car you’d always dreamed of? Everything else we’ve been waiting for will flee from our thoughts as we see the glory of God and enjoy His presence forever.

This line from a song by Sandra McCracken is one of my favorite descriptions of that day: “He has done great things, we will say together, we will feast and weep no more.”

Can you picture all of God’s people together, finally seeing the full goodness and beauty of our Lord and Savior, giving Him praise for all the great things He has done? Can you see the eyes that will never again cry sorrowful tears? On that day, we will have all we have ever waited for in Christ.

No matter what you face this week, your waiting will not last forever.

God is Good While We Wait {No Matter What Monday}

November 12, 2018 by Marissa Leave a Comment

Have you ever been so eager to see how a book ends that it makes you rush toward the finish? Often I skim quickly through pages of character development, scenic descriptions, and emotionally-laden dialogue because I just can’t wait to see the outcome. I miss the goodness and beauty as I rush through the tension to the resolution.

In a similar way, I sometimes miss the beauty of God’s goodness in the struggles of life because I’m weary of waiting. I shared last week how much I hate to wait. But God’s Word reminds us that the Author of our story always shows His goodness to us—not just by bringing an end to our waiting, but in the dreary, dragging, difficult middle.

In Lamentations 3, Jeremiah is in a tough spot. He has forgotten his happiness and finds himself in deep turmoil (Lamentations 3:17). He calls to mind God’s faithfulness, steadfast love, and daily mercies, and he puts his hope in the Lord (Lamentations 3:21-24). But his suffering doesn’t instantly end. He has peace, but he also still has problems. And then he says:

“The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him “ (Lamentations 3:25).

The Lord is good to us in our waiting. We don’t only look forward to future goodness when our wait is over. We can cling to His present goodness right here in the messy middle.

While you wait, God will hear you when you cry out to Him, and He will be with you (Micah 7:7, Psalm 40:1, Joshua 1:9, Hebrews 13:5).

While you wait, God will renew your strength when you are weary (Isaiah 40:31).

While you wait, God will never stop caring for you—not for one single minute (Psalm 23:6).

No matter what you face this week, God is good while you wait.
