Our Suffering Advances the Gospel {No Matter What Monday}

Have you ever wondered if there was a purpose to your pain? Knowing there’s a purpose behind our difficult circumstances doesn’t take away the sting of suffering, but it can give us a glimmer of encouragement and help us persevere.

This month, we’re looking at God’s purpose in suffering. Our goal isn’t to wrap up suffering in a neat package with a bow. There’s nothing pretty about pain. But in God’s kind sovereignty, He brings beauty from brokenness as He weaves our trials into the tapestry of His purposes.

In Philippians, Paul addresses friends who were upset about his imprisonment. These friends feared Paul’s imprisonment would end his travel and preaching. They may have worried that the entire Christian movement would fizzle out and die. But Paul reassured them that the gospel continued to go forth:

“I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.” (Philippians 1:12-14)

Your suffering may look differently from Paul’s, but God will use it to advance the gospel. Maybe your suffering is private. No one else even knows. But as you grow in dependence on the Lord, you’re advancing the gospel in your own heart. If your suffering is known by your family or a small circle of friends, they can watch you run to the Lord with your pain and be encouraged to trust Him more.

Whether you’re encouraging thousands with your story or quietly walking in obedience each day, rest assured that in God’s economy, no suffering is wasted. Your trials are advancing the good news of God’s faithfulness, mercy, and grace.

No matter what we face this week, our suffering advances the gospel.

Nothing Compares to Knowing Christ {No Matter What Monday}

A few years ago, I lost something of great value. My laptop crashed and was beyond repair. I lost several documents, most of which could be reconstructed. But I was devastated to learn I’d lost a year’s worth of photos and videos. They were irreplaceable, and they were gone.

The local repair shop couldn’t salvage anything. Then we learned of a company that would be likely to get many of the photos off the damaged hard drive. But it was expensive. When I told my husband the cost, he said: “There’s no price we can put on those photos. Do it.” Thankfully, the data retrieval company returned almost all of my priceless memories.

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in Him. (Philippians 3:8-9a)

The apostle Paul, author of these verses, gave up everything to follow Christ. His reputation, his standing in the Jewish community, his pedigree of law-keeping and service, his safety, and his freedom. Why would he make such a costly sacrifice? Because he knew no reputation, no position, no comfort, no riches would be a precious as His Savior. The worth of knowing Christ surpasses anything else this world can offer.

Photos are precious to me, and I grieved when I thought I’d lost them. However, knowing Christ is more valuable than my most priceless possession. More valuable than my home, my health, my freedom, or even my family. The treasure of knowing Christ is freely given and cannot be taken away. When we suffer loss, we can cling to the surpassing worth of knowing our Lord and Savior.

No matter what you face this week, remember nothing compares to the worth of knowing Jesus Christ.

Cast Your Anxieties {No Matter What Monday}

For the last two weeks, we’ve been talking about how Jesus humbled Himself to dwell among us and suffer for our salvation. Today we’re looking at one way we can respond to His humility—to humble ourselves by trusting Him with our worries.

You may have read or even memorized I Peter 5:7 before: “ . . . casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” I memorized this verse at Bible Study Fellowship as a young child, and it’s still one of my favorites. But I Peter 5:7 is a sentence fragment. It’s grammatically and ideologically connected to the previous verse:

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all of your anxieties on him, because he cares for you” (I Peter 5:6-7).

As we’re humbling ourselves, we’re casting all our anxieties on Him. We hurl our worries from our weak hands into His mighty hand, acknowledging that He is God, and we are not.

Throw your financial uncertainties on Him. He is your provider.

Throw your family worries on Him. He loves your loved ones even more than you do.

Throw your fears for the future on Him. His purposes cannot be thwarted, and He will be faithful to you.

Throw your failures on Him. He saves you by His grace and mercy.

As you let go of your worries and cast them on the Lord, you can have confidence that He will receive them. As verse 7 promises, He cares for you. Your worries do not fall on deaf ears or a hard heart. Your cares are cared for by your Heavenly Father.

No matter what you face this week, cast your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.

The Lord Knows Those Who Take Refuge in Him {No Matter What Monday}

It was the moment every performer dreads. My daughter sat at the grand piano in front of a hushed crowd, staring at her hands on the keys. There was no music in front of her, and her brain refused to bail out her stymied fingers. She was stuck, halfway through her piece. After a long pause and a couple of false starts, she finished the piece and took her bow. But in her mind, it was a disaster. A catastrophe. The Most Embarrassing Moment Ever in her short 7 years of life.

Can you guess what she did next? She ran to me. She climbed into my lap, buried her face in my chest, and cried. She didn’t run to her brothers, who were seated in the front row with the other performers. She didn’t run to the strangers in the audience seated right behind them. She didn’t even run to her piano teacher, whom she adores.

She ran to the one who knows her best.

Where do you run for comfort or refuge when life hurts? If I’m honest, I often run to a friend, to Facebook, or to a bag of popcorn. I forget the One who knows me in a way no one else does. My Heavenly Father knows my troubles and invites me to find refuge in Him.

Nahum 1:7: The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.

This verse gives us three reasons to run to the Lord with our troubles. 1) The Lord is good. It’s simple, but profound. He is unfailingly good. He will not disappoint us. 2) The Lord is a stronghold. He is a sure and steadfast anchor we can cling to in our struggles. 3) The Lord knows us. He knows our struggles. He knows our needs. He knows our past, present, and future. He knows.

No matter what we face this week, the Lord knows those who take refuge in Him.
