Steadfast Love that Gives Us Hope ~ Guest Appearance at Women Encouraged

March 28, 2018 by Marissa Leave a Comment

The worst day of my most difficult year wasn’t when the doctor told me I had a rare cancer with a crushingly low survival rate. It wasn’t the day I learned I’d spend many weeks away from my husband and young children receiving a clinical trial drug in Houston. It wasn’t the day of my mastectomy.

The low point came unexpectedly, right in the middle of months of suffering.

It was January 24, 2011. I was in Texas starting my fourth round of chemotherapy. My middle child was celebrating his fifth birthday back home in Arkansas. And I was convinced that my tumor, which had been shrinking, was now growing.

The poison dripped into my veins, guaranteeing that I’d feel terrible for the next two weeks. I wondered if the treatment was working and whether I’d live to see my children celebrate more birthdays. I longed to be a healthy mom who busied herself with gift wrap and cupcakes and stood grinning beside the birthday boy as he blew out the candles.

As I watched my son open gifts over my laptop webcam, I pasted on a fake smile and forced the tears to wait. But I knew they would come as my battle-weary heart wrestled with the question: How much worse would this get before it got better?

I didn’t want to keep fighting; I just wanted to go home to my babies.

I’m sharing how God gave me up in the midst of difficult times over at the Women Encouraged blog. I’d love for you to head over there to read the rest of the post and check out the biblical encouragement they share!

God’s Got You in His Grip {No Matter What Monday}

March 19, 2018 by Marissa 1 Comment

God's got you in His grip. Biblical encouragement, Scripture, and devotionals for women.

Last week, my kids and I walked through an unfamiliar city on our way to a concert. As I started to cross a wide street, my daughter hesitated and looked around anxiously. She didn’t want to follow me as confidently I stepped off the curb.

“Mom? Are you sure we should be crossing here?”

“Sweetheart, am I holding your hand?”

“Yes.”

“Then you can relax. You can let me take care of keeping you safe.”

My daughter didn’t look down the street and see the road blocks that kept that block car-free. She didn’t have the life experience to know that a concert venue plus large crowds plus police blockades equals safety crossing the street.  She became anxious because she forgot that the one who holds her hand cares for her more than she can imagine.

Each week, I send out these Monday devotionals to my email subscribers. I sign my emails with “In His grip.” It’s an intentional reminder of a truth that brings me great comfort—I’m in God’s hands. He’s holding on to me, and I’m safe and secure in Christ.

In John 10:27-29, Jesus said: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.”

Those who belong to Christ can never be snatched from His hand. We can count on this promise because our heavenly Father is greater than all. If He’s holding us, we can trust that He won’t let go. There is nothing that can loosen His grip. One of my favorite songs, “In Christ Alone,” puts it this way: “No power of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand.”

You will face trouble and suffering in this world. But if you are in Christ, nothing you face can ever separate you from God’s loving hold on you (Romans 8:38-39). He’s got you, and He won’t let go.

No matter what you face this week, God’s got you in His grip.

God is Always On Time {No Matter What Monday}

March 5, 2018 by Marissa Leave a Comment

God is always right on time. Biblical encouragement, Scripture, and devotionals for women.

Do you ever have one of those days when you run behind schedule ALL. DAY. LONG? You have a to-do list that’s growing, not shrinking. You hit snooze one time too many and got a late start. The dog pees the carpet right as you’re leaving the house. Your toddler goes on strike and refuses to put on his shoes. And of course, it’s pouring rain and traffic is terrible.

I don’t have the toddler excuse anymore. But I still have a snooze button, a dog, and a to-do list, so I have a lot of these can’t-catch-up days. I don’t seem to have enough time to do all that I need to do, yet I still try to squeeze it all in. I end up being late every step of the way.

God never has one of those days. Psalm 90 tells us that God has all the time in the world. Literally.

“Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” (Psalm 90:1-2)

From everlasting to everlasting—can you imagine? The eternal existence of God is more than my finite brain can grasp.

But I know this: from everlasting to everlasting is a really, really long time. God never has to worry about accomplishing all He plans to do. He is never rushed, never running behind schedule, never cutting corners to catch up.

God is always right on time.

From our perspective, we sometimes feel that God could hustle a bit more. We’d like Him to heal our friend, provide a new job, or answer our questions—and if it would have been done yesterday, it wouldn’t have been too soon.

The reality is, God’s timing is always perfect. He isn’t bound by time, but rather He rules over it. He uses time to bring about His purposes in our lives, and it’s always just right.

No matter what you face this week, you can trust God’s perfect timing.

God’s Truth Remains Forever {No Matter What Monday}

February 19, 2018 by Marissa Leave a Comment

The truth of God's Word stands forever. Biblical encouragement, Scripture, and devotionals for women.

“You can’t trust everything you read on the internet.” – Abraham Lincoln 😉

How much information have you consumed already today? Maybe you’ve read a devotional book or your Bible, maybe you’ve checked your email. (And not necessarily in that order.) Have you gotten online and read some of the 3.3 million updates posted to Facebook every minute? What about one of the 2 million blogs that will be posted today?

We’re not lacking for information, are we? We can’t escape it! If you’re like me, you might even have apps on your phone to prevent you from sitting and consuming information all day long.

Not all of it is bad—you’re reading this online, aren’t you? But a lot of what we consume is a waste of time, harmful to our emotional health, or even completely false information (see the above quote!).

When we want lasting truth, there is just one place to turn:

“For ‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.’ And this word is the good news that was preached to you.” (1 Peter 1:24–25)

In times of uncertainty, difficulty, or doubt, God’s Word brings peace and comfort. It tells us of God’s unchanging promises. It reminds us of the great salvation given to us by grace through faith in Christ. It breathes life into our weary hearts and equips us for the days ahead.

The information we consume is quickly buried by the avalanche of new data, new articles, and new arguments. When you feel pushed and pulled by the whims of your Facebook feed, hold on to this truth: The promises of God’s Word remain forever.

The good news of the Gospel doesn’t wither or fade with the times. Christ lived, died, and rose again to save sinners. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, this truth remains.

No matter what you face this week, the truth of God’s Word remains forever.
