The Expert of Everything {No Matter What Monday}

March 12, 2018 by Marissa Leave a Comment

Trust the Expert of everything. Biblical encouragement, Scripture, and devotionals for women.

Have you ever needed an expert? In 2010, I was diagnosed with angiosarcoma, a rare cancer that doctors in my area only see about once a decade. I went to the largest medical facility in my state, where they see it once or twice a year. Then I went to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. There we found an oncologist who treats it once or twice a week, with great success. My husband and I looked at each other with the same thought in our heads: “We choose this guy.”

We trusted this doctor because he knows more about angiosarcoma than most people on the planet. We knew that no matter how much searching and reading we did, our understanding of this complicated disease could never match his. Because of his expertise, we decided to do whatever he told us to do—even when we didn’t like his plans, and even when his recommendations were difficult and life-altering. His expertise led us to put my life in his hands, medically speaking.

The same is true of the Lord. There is no limit to the extent of His knowledge and wisdom, not just about cancer, but about everything in all creation. He is the ultimate Expert of everything.

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” (Romans 11:33-34)

We can confidently choose to trust the Lord because of His riches of wisdom. He knows the past, present, and future. He knows all the possibilities and which ones will become realities. He knows how He will provide for His children and every situation they will face. He knows what is best for us, even when it doesn’t make sense from our perspective.

Not only does He know all things, but He uses His knowledge to always do what is right. We can feel safe putting our lives in His loving and faithful hands.

No matter what you face this week, you can trust the One who is the ultimate Expert of everything.

God is Always On Time {No Matter What Monday}

March 5, 2018 by Marissa Leave a Comment

God is always right on time. Biblical encouragement, Scripture, and devotionals for women.

Do you ever have one of those days when you run behind schedule ALL. DAY. LONG? You have a to-do list that’s growing, not shrinking. You hit snooze one time too many and got a late start. The dog pees the carpet right as you’re leaving the house. Your toddler goes on strike and refuses to put on his shoes. And of course, it’s pouring rain and traffic is terrible.

I don’t have the toddler excuse anymore. But I still have a snooze button, a dog, and a to-do list, so I have a lot of these can’t-catch-up days. I don’t seem to have enough time to do all that I need to do, yet I still try to squeeze it all in. I end up being late every step of the way.

God never has one of those days. Psalm 90 tells us that God has all the time in the world. Literally.

“Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” (Psalm 90:1-2)

From everlasting to everlasting—can you imagine? The eternal existence of God is more than my finite brain can grasp.

But I know this: from everlasting to everlasting is a really, really long time. God never has to worry about accomplishing all He plans to do. He is never rushed, never running behind schedule, never cutting corners to catch up.

God is always right on time.

From our perspective, we sometimes feel that God could hustle a bit more. We’d like Him to heal our friend, provide a new job, or answer our questions—and if it would have been done yesterday, it wouldn’t have been too soon.

The reality is, God’s timing is always perfect. He isn’t bound by time, but rather He rules over it. He uses time to bring about His purposes in our lives, and it’s always just right.

No matter what you face this week, you can trust God’s perfect timing.

Christ Jesus Made You His Own {No Matter What Monday}

February 26, 2018 by Marissa Leave a Comment

Christ Jesus has made you His own. Biblical encouragement, Scripture, and devotionals for women.

This week I’m taking my oldest child, who just turned 14, to test for his driving permit. (Pray for me!) To receive his permit, we need to take my driver’s license, to prove that I’m an Arkansas resident, and my child’s birth certificate, to prove that he belongs to me.

Because he’s my child, my son has certain privileges and also responsibilities. He doesn’t get food, clothing, shelter, and love because he’s earned them, and he doesn’t finish his chores each week to secure his status as our child. But rather, he receives privileges and has responsibilities because he’s our child.

I couldn’t deny my son even if I wanted to—the state of Indiana made it official in 2004 when they put my name on his birth certificate. In the coming years, there might be days when he ignores me, questions my goodness to him, or strays from my instructions. But nothing will change the fact that he belongs to me.

In Philippians 3, Paul makes this beautiful statement as he discusses his striving in the Christian life:

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” (Philippians 3:12)

The gifts we receive from Christ and our obedience to Christ both flow from what Christ has done for us—He’s made us His own. Paul revels in his status as God’s child, not because of a righteousness of his own, but because of a righteousness from God through faith (Phil. 3:9). He knows he isn’t perfect, but he’s secure in the perfection of Christ.

Because of this solid standing before God, Paul is pressing on in his faith (Phil. 3:13-14). We don’t chase after holiness as a way of proving ourselves to God. We pursue righteousness because the Righteous One has pursued and taken hold of us.

I hope this brings you comfort today, friend. Whether you’re struggling through suffering or wrestling with sin, remember that Christ Jesus died to make you His own. You can rest securely in His love for you.

No matter what you face this week, Christ Jesus has made you His own.

God’s Truth Remains Forever {No Matter What Monday}

February 19, 2018 by Marissa Leave a Comment

The truth of God's Word stands forever. Biblical encouragement, Scripture, and devotionals for women.

“You can’t trust everything you read on the internet.” – Abraham Lincoln 😉

How much information have you consumed already today? Maybe you’ve read a devotional book or your Bible, maybe you’ve checked your email. (And not necessarily in that order.) Have you gotten online and read some of the 3.3 million updates posted to Facebook every minute? What about one of the 2 million blogs that will be posted today?

We’re not lacking for information, are we? We can’t escape it! If you’re like me, you might even have apps on your phone to prevent you from sitting and consuming information all day long.

Not all of it is bad—you’re reading this online, aren’t you? But a lot of what we consume is a waste of time, harmful to our emotional health, or even completely false information (see the above quote!).

When we want lasting truth, there is just one place to turn:

“For ‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.’ And this word is the good news that was preached to you.” (1 Peter 1:24–25)

In times of uncertainty, difficulty, or doubt, God’s Word brings peace and comfort. It tells us of God’s unchanging promises. It reminds us of the great salvation given to us by grace through faith in Christ. It breathes life into our weary hearts and equips us for the days ahead.

The information we consume is quickly buried by the avalanche of new data, new articles, and new arguments. When you feel pushed and pulled by the whims of your Facebook feed, hold on to this truth: The promises of God’s Word remain forever.

The good news of the Gospel doesn’t wither or fade with the times. Christ lived, died, and rose again to save sinners. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, this truth remains.

No matter what you face this week, the truth of God’s Word remains forever.
